Drawing them in?

In a recent post I reported that I have been sketching the children at the orphanage. Some of you asked to see my drawings. My goal is give these little guys an appreciation for art. They try to sit still but they are so distracted by the others and the general chaos that I am dealing with moving targets. In a matter of moments, they are up and about, so any hope of having a fixed pose is useless. To my art teacher Dawn, thanks for your patience and support and yes, I see the eye in the second pose is totally off and, I know I could fix it and it is only one in ten thousand!
At my next visit I am bringing paper and pencils and will try to get the children to do my portrait. I am going to wiggle intentionally. They will laugh and then they will scold me for moving!

  1. I think you are having a fantastic time! And that's terrific! You and the kids do and will appreciate each other more and more in the times to come. I would urge you to make the most of your adventure, but I know that you are!

  2. I can imagine you wiggling and even teasing them into telling you to hold still. I'm sure it will be fun. Thanks for posting these. Funky eye or no, the 2nd is my favorite. I can visualize the real child best in that one. I know how much you like having non-wiggly models. Can you get them to fall asleep? :)

  3. I think they are wonderful...spontaneous and expressive, even if they are a little bit rough. But that's pretty much inevitable under the circumstances.

I don't think those kids could have been too much worse than I was when my husband was on a life drawing kick, though. He usually couldn't afford to take a class, or not as often as he would have liked, so guess who got drafted into modeling? And "drafted" is definitely the word for it, because I totally hate sitting still! I must have been marginally better than those kids because he did manage to produce some reasonably good drawings of me--even some paintings on occasion.

Oh yeah...and Happy Birthday again! :-)

  4. Lol, you're a natural with kids and as we say in French, "you have a good pencil stroke" (un bon coup de crayon).

  6. Hi Lee! Great drawings. We miss you at drawing class but I see you have been doing your homework. You have captured the spirit and movement of the child. You will cherish these drawings when you return. Keep it up. I am of to my workshop on Whidbey Island and will miss you blog. Have a great time in England.

  8. Nice sketches. I see we have similar sketching style. Pencil drawings are my favorite way. Wiggling subjects can be a pain but I sense you are enjoying the time with the children.

    Next chapter, please. MB
